Practice notes

A different way to read a dance.

Explore historical dance manuals with the Library of Congress as your starting point.

01

Read the document in its time

The American Ballroom Companion brings together social-dance manuals and related works across several centuries. These sources record more than steps: introductions, etiquette and illustrations also reflect the societies in which they were published.

02

Use the reading guide

The Library of Congress essay on reading a dance manual explains why notation and terminology need interpretation. Begin with the source’s own introductory material and supporting notes. A familiar-looking word may carry a different meaning in another period.

03

Keep a full reference

Record the author, title, edition and page number alongside the collection link. Separate what the document says from your interpretation. Use modern instruction for questions about your own practice; the collection is a historical resource, not personalised teaching.
