Practice notes

Give a routine a readable shape.

A note-taking approach to sections, transitions and the places a sequence repeats.

01

Draw a section map

During a viewing, label the sections A, B and C in your notes and record where each begins. If a section returns, refer back to its label. This is a memory aid for your own lesson, not a substitute for the choreographer’s terminology.

02

Notice the joins

The transition between two familiar sections can be the part that needs explanation. Record the final count of one section and the opening cue of the next. Bring a precise question about that join to your teacher.

03

Respect the work

Use your notes to organise your own learning. A purchased video does not automatically grant permission to upload its clips, distribute its choreography or use its soundtrack in a public performance. Check the creator’s stated permissions for the use you have in mind.
