Practice notes

Watch the performance as a performance.

A dance film can reward close attention without being an instruction course.

01

Read how the film is described

A filmed stage performance, documentary and tutorial have different purposes. Check the credits, programme notes and format. A beautiful close-up may serve the film while leaving out details a learner would need from a lesson.

02

Choose an observation to follow

On one viewing, notice the entrances and exits. On another, look at the use of space or the relationship to music. These are viewing prompts, not authoritative interpretations of the choreographer’s intent.

03

Keep the credits with the note

Record the work, performers, choreographer and recording details where they are supplied. If you cannot identify a credit, leave it unknown rather than guessing. Link to the creator’s authorised source when sharing a recommendation.
