Practice notes

Make the steps easier to follow.

Read the viewpoint, the counts and the chapter structure before trying to memorise a sequence.

01

Name the viewpoint

A front-facing teacher may mirror the learner or use their own left and right. A rear view changes that relationship again. Listen for the video’s explanation and record it in your notes; do not assume every instructor uses the same convention.

02

Find the phrase boundary

Watch for the moment a demonstration begins and returns to its starting position. Save that timestamp and the name the instructor uses. A chapter may contain several short phrases, so a chapter title alone can be too broad a reference.

03

Use the teacher’s vocabulary

Copy a step name into your own notes, along with a short description in words that make sense to you. Do not treat two similar-looking demonstrations as identical across dance traditions. Ask about differences in a lesson where the teacher can respond.
