Explore a style

Look for the style behind the label.

Choose a hip-hop dance video by its teacher, context and explanation, rather than the cover alone.

01

Ask what the lesson actually teaches

“Hip hop” is often used broadly in video titles. Read the instructor’s description of the particular vocabulary or tradition being taught. A choreography tutorial and a foundation-focused lesson have different aims, even if they share a music genre.

02

Let the teacher introduce the context

Look for an instructor who explains the terms they use and credits the people or traditions they draw from. A sample should show how they teach, not just how they perform.

03

Record the explanation as well as the shape

A useful note captures the teacher’s cue, the chapter and a question. Avoid assigning a technique name from appearance alone. If the movement or its context is unclear, seek a class or teacher who can explain it directly.
