Getting started

Find someone you can ask.

Use a teacher’s stated experience, class description and answers to your questions to choose a starting point.

01

Start with the style and the setting

Search for the specific style you want to learn, the location or online format you need and a level that matches your experience. The ISTD directory is one source of member teacher listings; it is not the only way to find instruction.

02

Ask how the class works

Find out how the teacher places beginners, explains the course structure and handles questions. For online teaching, ask how learners receive feedback and what camera or space setup is expected. Look for clear policies and an actual way to contact the provider.

03

Bring a concrete question

A chapter reference from a video can help explain what you want to learn or what confused you. Share the title and timestamp rather than asking the teacher to interpret an entire course. Directory membership alone does not answer whether a particular class fits your needs.
